Quantum corrections to critical phenomena in gravitational collapse

چکیده
We investigate conformally coupled quantum matter fields on spherically symmetric, continuously self-similar backgrounds. By exploiting the symmetry associated with the self-similarity the general structure of the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor can be derived. As an immediate application we consider a combination of classical, and quantum perturbations about exactly critical collapse. Generalizing the standard argument which explains the scaling law for black hole mass, M ∝ |η − η| , we demonstrate the existence of a quantum mass gap when the classical critical exponent satisfies β ≥ 0.5. When β < 0.5 our argument is inconclusive; the semi-classical approximation breaks down in the spacetime region of interest.

S-matrix and Quantum Tunneling in Gravitational Collapse
Using the recently introduced ACV reduced-action approach to transplanckian scattering of light particles, we show that the S-matrix in the region of classical gravitational collapse is related to a tunneling amplitude in an effective field space. We understand in this way the role of both real and complex field solutions, the choice of the physical ones, the absorption of the elastic channel a...
متن کاملCritical Phenomena in Gravitational Collapse
It was well known that strong enough initial configurations of matter field would result in gravitational collapse to black holes, whereas weak enough initial data become dispersed to infinity. However, what happens in the intermediate region was not clear until the discovery of the critical phenomena in gravitational collapse by Choptuik in 1993 [1]. He examined numerically the spacetime evolu...
متن کاملSpherical Collapse of a Mass-Less Scalar Field With Semi-Classical Corrections
We investigate numerically spherically symmetric collapse of a scalar field in the semi-classical approximation. We first verify that our code reproduces the critical phenomena (the Choptuik effect) in the classical limit and black hole evaporation in the semi classical limit. We then investigate the effect of evaporation on the critical behavior. The introduction of the Planck length by the qu...
متن کاملCritical Phenomena in Gravitational Collapse
As first discovered by Choptuik, the black hole threshold in the space of initial data for general relativity shows both surprising structure and surprising simplicity. Universality, power-law scaling of the black hole mass, and scale echoing have given rise to the term "critical phenomena". They are explained by the existence of exact solutions which are attractors within the black hole thresh...
متن کاملQuantum Mechanics without Spacetime Iii -a Proposal for a Non-linear Schrodinger Equation
It is proposed that the Schrodinger equation for a free point particle has non-linear corrections which depend on the mass of the particle. It is assumed that the corrections become extremely small when the mass is much smaller or much larger than a critical value (the critical value being related to but smaller than Planck mass). The corrections become significant when the mass is close to thi...
